Back on the straight and narrow for this post which means a simple artist profile. This time it is an Irish lady producing charming americana from the spiritual home of americana: Nashville.
In this regard, the lady in question is Jayne Trimble. Hailing from Coney Island Co. Down,(a favourite spot of Van Morrison's I think?) she is currently based in Nashville. Jayne studied music and drama in London before setting out on her own road. Before reaching Nashville, she worked for a time as a backing vocalist in London and was then gigging round the city. Her music could be described as a perfect blend of the influences of both Irish and american traditional melodies.
Jayne released her debut ep at the start of the year. Titled "Run Onwards", the ep was funded through a successful WeFund campaign that resulted in her having the money to travel to Nashville and after a chance encounter, record the ep with producer John Keane. The four track ep contains a mixture of country-folk like "I Let go" to more poppy songs like "Shine". "I Let Go" is reminiscent of Alison Krauss and Union Station, strong harmonies, those Dobro licks. A lovely warm song.
In one way, Jayne's songs are, for me,a continuation and a combination of leading female folk singers from both sides of the Atlantic; Kristy McCall, Francis Black and in particular: Meg Baird and Shawn Colvin. In particular the lovely acoustic version of "You'll follow me" is a perfectly paced little love song.
On the other end of the spectrum, although the quality isn't too good in this video, the upbeat "Wherever you go" demonstrates the great voice Jayne has along with subtle harmonies, superb arrangements and the ability to write a great foot tappin' americana tune.
To catch Jayne live, you might have to head out west, way west but hopefully she will be touring at home soon. You can find more info about Jayne on her official site here. The ep is available to purchase on Bandcamp or Itunes if you prefer. Never forget the facebook page.
