Introducing Corner Boy (a.k.a. Michael D'Arcy), a Wexford raised folk artist about to release his debut ep.
Sadly there not too much information available about Corner Boy, the more mystery the better I suppose. What information is available is that Michael began his career as a member of a number of folk/trad groups and collectives. Then late in 2011, he decided to up sticks and move to Montreal Canada, where after coming across a few different producers, he got to record tracks that will form Corner Boy's first ep.
The debut ep titled The Sunlight E.P is due for release in December. The tracks that he has available on soundcloud suggest an accomplished writer and arranger of uplifting americana folk. The music of Corner Boy brings some obvious comparisons to mind. "Go Soft Into The Night" suggests Bon Ivor is an influence. The tone, composition and style are all comparable. The song is a mixture of sparse synth, kick drum and acoustic guitar with voices of almost strained layered vocals.
The debut ep was recorded in the romantically sounding town of Lennoxvile in Quebec. The tracks on the ep are based on his travels across North America. Perhaps fittingly there is a song about going home. Sounding like a more laid back version of Edward Sharpe (if that is possible) "Let's hit the road (home)" starts off as an acapella hymn to getting home. Supported by hand claps, a vocal chorus and merging into a warm coda, it feels like the perfect travelling song.
You can listen to Corner boy's three available tracks on the soundcloud page here with the "Sunlight" demo available to download. There is also the facebook page. Also check out hisYoutube for some live versions of tracks and some covers as well, the Lumineers one being my particular favourite.
