Only the second Irish dwelling American to be featured on this blog, Gentry Morris is a man bringing wholesome americana from the homeland to these shores.
Gentry was raised in the state of Georgia. At the age of 20, the man moved to Nashville to learn his craft and after five years of Nashville, he moved to Bangor. The question you might be asking right now. Why Bangor? Apparently Bangor came into the equation as he had previously worked in a summer camp in Newcastle. Co Down and from that ended up in Bangor with his wife.
Taking his cue from other americana tinged singer-songerwriters like Ryan Adams, Josh Rouse and Josh Ritter; Gentry's style of pop/indie influenced americana is soft and warm. No right angles. All soft corners, cosy melodies. The song "The Box" would be a sound example of this. A story about a hold-all place for things, and the memories it contains, the song demonstrates the maxim that less can be often be superior to more when it comes to arrangements. Simple, amiable and enjoyable.
Gentry got his big break in Ireland after he sent an email to Juliet Turner after which he ended up touring with her. His track with her taken from his second album "Awake O Sleeper", titled "Lie" is a superbly arranged song. Backed by an orchestra, with some lovely lead guitar, the combined vocals of Juliet and Gentry make the difficult task of singing together sound effortless.
Gentry is currently a member of the band Amidships and they are about to begin a full Irish tour, the dates which you can find here. Gentry is hoping to release his next solo album towards the middle of 2013. You can keep updated on his progress and purchase his albums on his official site. And there is the usual Facebook as well.
