I don't think I have posted about any Irish solo female americana influenced artists yet on this blog. Yes probably none. Well that's about to change now: introducing Deetrich.
Her name is Dee Doyle. I'll call her Deetrich for the time being. Deetrich hails from Kilkenny. She has been gigging with various line-ups since 2006 including Dali and The Whiteliars. Now she is setting upon the solo career and fair play to her. She has signed to Reekus Records with the debut album "Tug of War" which is due out very soon.
Last year she released two singles "I'm Alive and "No Job No Money" in October and September.”No Job, No Money" is a lovely pop song. The music might be termed on the edge of americana but you can feel the effect of the genre in the songs. She has cited Feist and Gillian Welch amongst influences and this gives you a fairly good idea of the music Deetrich makes. I would include Lucinda Williams as well. She makes the similar sort of music that moves gracefully between pop, americana and ballad. The images I get from listening to this song is a warm, fuzzy, sunny day on sand dunes beside the sea (I'm a wannabe music video director!). The song is beautifully produced with the perfect balance of banjo, washboard and (is that an) accordion that are mixed so well together. A perfect song for your lazy day.
"Hold your fire" is a bit more of a darker affair. I like this song and her music in general because it manages to achieve that very difficult balance in writing dark or sombre or angry lyrics with inviting melodies without being overt about it. The words sort of seep into you instead of jumping at you. It's easy to write such songs without putting the effort into the arrangements of the music but doesn’t happen here. Again skilfully arranged. If this woman was in America right now she would easily be compared to new young americana female artists like Jessica Lea Mayfield and Sarah Jaffe. She stands on her own two feet here.
You can buy "No Job, No Money" on Bandcamp and if you want to listen to a few more of her songs, give a gawk at the Breaking Tunes page.
