Apologies for the delay in the posts lately. I have been working on stuff behind the scenes. Hopefully you will see some changes soon. Anyway, back to the tunes.
Not to be confused with archaeological digs in Dublin or NASA satellite missions to Mars, the Viking Project are a self described dirty folk rock band. I suppose if someone was going to name a band that played dirty folk rock then "The Viking Project" is probably the most apt. The image you might imagine from hearing the name would suggest gruff, beardy, long-haired men and you would not be far off. Well I can’t comment on the gruff. They look like sound lads. Made up of Mick Purcell (Harmonica), Ste Guyett (Guitar), David Tully (Guitar), Tim George (Bass) and Andy Guyett (Drums) with nearly everyone in the band singing, the band are aiming to bring their foot-stompin' Project around the country this summer.
The band are similar in style to The Rye whom I discussed a few weeks ago. Like the Rye, their sound is a melting pot of influences and genres. With the benefit of four singers in the band, their music has a real spacious, inclusive feel to it. This is most obvious in the acoustic "Distance". A band with strong harmonies like these are rare.
The band formed in April of last year and have been progressing nicely since, doing gigs at both Electric Picnic and the Spirit of Folk Festival. The track "Get Sunk Down" might give you a feel for what they mean when they talk about dirty-folk-rock. I think this song is the standard for this new genre. Featuring abrasive harmonica (that's a good thing), heavy drums, and a brilliant climax with some wild howls this song is throwback to great 70's southern country-rock.
The band will be appearing at Knockanstockan next weekend and CastlePalooza in Tullamore in August. Great opportunities to catch their foot-stompin' melodies. Check out the Facebook to keep updated and the Soundcloud page where you can download "Get Sunk Down" for free.
