Apologies for the delay since my last post. Got distracted by the wonders of the world and then the olympics was on...a lot. And sure that only happens once every four years so one is practically obliged to watch as much as one can.
At least I am back with a bang. The bang in question being The Last Tycoons. Formed in 2007 after the breakup of the band Porn Trauma, these fellas have steadily built a reputation for blues-garage country rock. The band is led by Stephen Fanning (guitar/Lead Vocals) with Daniel Fitzpatrick (guitar/piano/trumpet/vocals), Aoife Ruth (Piano/organ/vocals), Matt Roddy (Bass Guitar/vocals) and Michiel Mogerzeil (drums). The banc released their self-titled debut album in 2010 and have since released an ep of the bands former guise titled "The Porn Trauma Years". The band seems to be particularly making waves in Germany where they are gigging regularly.
The music of The Last Tycoons moves effortlessly from americana to southern rock. The first single off the debut album was "The Dry County". A call to arms for drinking (I think), it feels like something straight off "The Big Pink". The bands whole sound is familiar to those of you who enjoy the music of "The Band". Jangly guitars, seeping organ and strong harmonies. And when did Richard Ashcroft give up the Britpop to pursue americana in Ireland??
The band are all excellent musicians and that is demonstrated by the live sessions they recorded for 2fm. "Speed" again feels like a throwback to early country-rock; the sort of music the Eagles were making before they went a bit stadium rock and probably more reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd at their most country. A beefed-up jaunty rock number. This song just zips along and your foot is tappin' all the time.
"Seven Days off the Road" follows along a similar vein but a bit more poppy affair. The organ here is the standout for me, really pulls the song together.
The facebook is here. The soundcloud is here and their Youtube is there. It’s worth checking out for the great bluegrass version of Johnny B.Goode alone on this video.
