It’s a Tuesday evening in Galway, the sky is clear and the sun is shining. What could be wrong in the world? Well it’s the first day back at work after three days off and like most people I am still recovering from the weekend....slowly. Time then to wake myself up. Lucky that I came across Kaplin. They are a Dublin based band not afraid to ROCK or more specifically not afraid to alt-country rock. The band released their first single (a double A-side no less) in 2009 and are expecting to release the debut album this year. Their sound as they have highlighted themselves has been described before as a cross between Mark Lanegan and Calexico. Personally I like to ascribe them more to an angry Calexico. Calexico's music has been described before as "desert noir" and I think that tag suits this band perfectly. The two tracks on the single have that combination of that southern states fusion of folk instruments, jangly guitars and driving drums. It can be felt most on "Your Lovers Bed".
Listening to these tracks has me thinking about the people who crossed me but at the same time where can I get a burrito at this time of the evening. I especially love the sinister, low, rumbling voice in the chorus of "Papa Don't Preach No More". Now to find more desert noir.
There is two more tracks to listen to here. Here's hoping they take their upcoming album on tour soon.
